Some phones are live even when they are on hook. Simple recording connectors
send any signal they receive to the recorder, meaning that you can get
recordings due to noise in the room. The Intelligent Recording Interface
prevents starting of recording by room noise when the phone is on hook because
its microprocessor can detect when a call is in progress
In use indicator light, shows when you are on a call, even if you are not
talking. Stops people interrupting you when you are listening on the phone

The IRI can adjust the volume of the customer in your handset/headset to a
comfortable level, even if your telephone does not have this facility
Adjustable record level for each side of the conversation for fine tuning of
recording quality
Switchable tone injection to verify that the telephone is off-hook
Transformer isolation from telephone line
For developers: a stereo cable plugged into the mono socket sends a control
tone to indicate to an external application when the telephone is on and off
hook. Also the LED socket gives a voltage when a call is in progress, and not
between calls
